Yes I am a Kid, and I have Diabetes

The words on the page blurred and I struggled to stay awake. I was so sleepy. If I could just close my eyes for one moment then maybe I would feel more awake.

Glancing at the teacher I could see she was looking at me strangely. Next thing I knew she was tapping me on the shoulder and telling me to wake up and trying to get me to drink some juice. All the other kids were staring at me and I was ordered to the principal’s office.

If I didn’t feel so badly I would totally be embarrassed. My mom came and took me to the doctor’s office and they poked me with needles and took blood out of my arm. It was really scary. Then they sat down and looked very worried as they told me that I had diabetes. I was scared and wondered if they looked so serious because it was my fault.

Having a child with diabetes is a serious, serious responsibility. After I was diagnosed with diabetes I was treated differently. I had to poke my finger every morning, before lunch, before P.E., before dinner and before bedtime. Depending on my blood sugar levels I had to have a shot of insulin from a needle or an insulin pen. Then in the middle of the night my parents come wake me and test my blood sugar levels to be sure it is not too low. You see if I my blood sugar goes too low, I will pass out. If my blood sugar levels get too high, I will also go unconscious and might die without immediate treatment.

I live with this every day. Some days I am tired of living this way. Watching my friends eating yummy cupcakes with chocolate frosting while I eat a piece of celery with peanut butter on it. I can NEVER quit! I can never quit eating this way. Even when I am tired of it. It is not like a diet that I can go off of when I have lost enough weight. I must eat this way my entire life.

Educate other students. Encourage students and teachers to understand what I am going through. Help students and teachers to recognize these signs of hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia. Help me feel like a 'normal' kid.
