Pick Me and Eat Me! |
The apples are a beautiful display of red, yellow, and green;
dangling temptingly on the tree just waiting to be picked. The sun is shining a
warm yellow, and you quickly dress your children, find a laundry basket and
venture outside to gather those delicious treasures. Soon your basket is full
of glistening apples. Your children’s cheeks are rosy from the fresh, fall air
and you head indoors to warmth and a tasty snack.
Not only were the apples fun to pick; but they will make a
perfect snack for those hungry children. Have them hang up their coats, wash up
and gather round for sliced rainbow apples with a protein rich almond or peanut
butter to dip in.
After the children have regained their energy,
they are ready
for a new project.

If you have an apple peeler, you can set your children to
this task and they will love it! First wash and dry the apples. Children often
find it fun to choose a varied selection of the apple choices. One child may
choose a green apple and another a red. Slide the apple onto the peeler and
press it fully onto the prongs. Hold onto the base of the peeler to give
strength to it because when the children turn the handle, it will sometimes twist
the base off of the table. Watch the apple spin round and round while it is
sliced into small curlicues. Fill a gallon
sized bowl with apple curlicues. Next prepare your batter. Enlist the children’s help as the
flour, salt and sugar is measured and mixed together. One recipe I have
included a link to is one my children loved.

Dusk is falling and you finish putting the dinner plates on
the table. Your children are washed up for dinner and helping to set the
silverware and napkins. The warm glow of lights fills the house with a sense of
warmth. In walks your husband from work to the scent of cinnamon and apples,
and to the enthusiastic greetings of the children as they seek to share their
part of the preparation of the dessert bread. A satisfied smile rests on your
face, as you pour yourself a steaming cup of coffee and enjoy the results of a
job well done.
