“Bye-Bye Baby Bye-Bye”
You pause on your way home from a friend’s
house. “Joanie, wave bye-bye”.
At first Joanie stared off into space; but then as she grew older she began to smile and coo as you left. Now as you say, ‘goodbye,’ Joanie lifts a hand and flaps her hand in the air. “Joanie, you did it!” You squeal. “You waved bye-bye!”

Your baby has been listening to you and others talk for many months now and observing your interactions with others as well. Your baby understands much more than he or she can express at this age. You would be surprised at how much verbal and non-verbal signals your baby has been integrating into their personality at the age of seven to fourteen months. Little Joanie has noticed how you greet people and what happens when you leave.
The day your baby finally lifts a hand in a definite farewell motion sends a wave of excitement through you and for good reason. Communication has begun! Your baby has just made their mark in the huge milestone step of communication. It is no coincidence the timing of waving with the development of the areas of the brain that relate to communication and the fine motor skills that are needed to perform the waving action. Keep a watch out, your baby is on the move, cognitively, physically, emotionally and socially. Each day will have its challenges as well as its treasures to remember and hold near to your heart.
