Fry
that Fish
Springtime has a
host of new activities to do with children and one of my favorites is fishing.
Gather up your fishing poles and head
off to the lakes or streams for some wonderful memories.
Fishing is not about how many fish
you can catch, it is about the journey.
Fishing is sitting on
the bank of a creek or lake, waiting in companionable silence, or even falling
asleep in the heat of the sun. But, beware, just when you have relaxed too
much; your pole will arch steeply, the line will zip out and you will have a feisty
fish tugging on the end of your pole.
Not only is there
the fun of catching a fish; but also there is the pure delight of watching your
child as he/she jumps around with the net trying to scoop up the fish. If your
child is holding the pole you might be able to steal a few minutes of video
while they are reeling in that prize catch.
Now to proudly carry
home the trophy!
This is not the end
of the day. Now you get the educational opportunity to clean the fish. Science
in action. Talk about the parts of the fish, its internal organs as you clean
it, the benefits of scales as you scrape them off.
By this time you
should have built up an appetite. Set a pan on the burner and let it heat up.
Plan your favorite fish recipe or experiment
with a new one. My Mom’s favorite was to lay the cleaned fish onto a cornmeal
and flour mix, roll it well, then add to the heated pan with a little butter.
Fry the fish a few minutes on each side. You will know it is cooked when the
meat is easy to flake apart with a fork. Season with salt and pepper to taste
and bon appetite!
Fun idea - Create a graph that tracks the size of fish caught throughout the year.
