Infant Tummy Time

Sometimes the baby will fuss and cry when set on the floor to play. It may make you feel bad and want to pick the baby up, but this tummy time is needed to build muscles, coordination and stamina. They become stronger and develop the skills necessary to hold their head up, scoot, crawl and so on.

If you place a rolled up towel under a baby's chest and armpits, allowing him to be slightly inclined, he will smile and then reach out for stimulating objects. You can also put baby on your chest as you lay on the floor so he can interact with you as he builds those muscles. Four and five month old babies are more purposeful with tummy time, scooting and pivoting to reach toys.

By providing time for tummy play, you help baby and his development.
