Sensorimotor Stage of Development

The sensorimotor stage is the stage of infant development from birth to 1 year of age. During this stage, infants learn about their environment by using their senses. Infants learn by doing. They explore the environment through sight, touch, smell, sound, and taste.

In order for this to happen, you must provide a safe environment and supervised freedom for them to move and explore. Encourage cognitive development during the sensorimotor stage by providing brightly colored mobiles and toys, play interactive games, point to objects and people and identify them by name, and discuss cause and effect actions.

Play is young children’s important work. They need lots of hands-on experiences and opportunities for climbing and moving. They also need plenty of interesting things to look at, touch, and manipulate.

Get down on the floor with the children and give them something to play with, some interaction with you. Use appropriate toys, balls, sounds, fabrics, etc. to keep them interested and encourage them to roll over, move forward, reach out, kick and use their bodies to in all ways that will help them gain strength and skills they need for development.
