Washington State Child Care Regulations for HIV/AIDS and Bloodborne Pathogens

Every employee who is included in the staff to child ratio must have written proof of HIV/AIDS and Bloodborne Pathogen training that includes prevention, transmission, treatment and confidentiality issues.

HIV/AIDS and Bloodborne courses do not meet the requirements for STARS training. These courses meet a different regulation other than annual training requirements, and are in addition to STARS.

We encounter a lot of confusion from child care professionals about the requirements for HIV/AIDS and Bloodborne Pathogens.  STARS is training that is required under a separate law from HIV/AIDS and Bloodborne Pathogens.  They are BOTH required, just different requirements, under separate laws.

Regardless of where or how you complete the HIV/AIDS and Bloodborne Pathogens they will NEVER earn STARS credit.  They are two totally different programs, both required in Washington State.

After the initial Child Care Basics, child care providers are required to complete 10 hours of annual STARS training.  Once our students have completed their STARS training, we record that training in their MERIT profile.

However, trainers are unable to record HIV/AIDS and Bloodborne courses in MERIT.  Child care professionals should keep their certificates for HIV/AIDS and Bloodborne in their employee files, and provide them to the child care licensor upon request.

HIV/AIDS and Bloodborne Pathogens courses can be done online, to meet Washington State requirements for child care professionals.
