Self-Care in Child Care

Working in child care exposes staff to a wide variety of germs. The first year a caregiver works with children, he/she may be sick more than any other time in his/her life.

Also, child care is a potentially stressful occupation. Staff burn-out is a very real problem. It is important to remember that caregivers (and directors) experience stress. Back problems are a common complaint among child care workers, as well. Be sure to practice proper lifting procedures to reduce stress on back muscles.

There are several things providers can do to keep themselves healthy.

To reduce stress:
  • Avoid situations the you know will cause stress. Think ahead and try to prevent those situations.
  • Learn to adapt, compromise and accept. Don't be so stuck in your ways that you are not willing to improve your situation.
  • Make time for fun. All work and no play... wears you out!
To prevent sickness:
  • Exercise regularly.
  • Eat a healthy diet.
  • Reduce or avoid caffeine, sugar, alcohol, cigarettes, and drugs.
  • Get enough sleep.
