Plan a Developmentally Appropriate Curriculum
Physical development is stressed in a quality early childhood curriculum. Young children develop a variety of skills through physical experiences that are a foundation for later learning. Coordination, stamina, flexibility, strength, and sensory awareness are all included.
Social development is another important aspect of a quality curriculum. Young children must learn to interact positively with other children and adults. Likewise, they need to learn to adapt to the expectations that are established in the center.
Young children need to acquire information to be able to understand and function in the world. As a result, cognitive development is an important area of the child's development. Thus, problem solving through hands-on activities will be an important part of the children's learning.
Emotional development is also an important element of a developmentally appropriate curriculum. Young children need to understand themselves. Feelings need to be understood in order to develop self-awareness and self-knowledge. Children need help in learning to recognize, label, and accept their feelings. They need to learn to assert their rights in culturally accepted ways without hurting others.
Your curriculum will need to be designed for the children. A broad knowledge of all the curriculum areas is important. You will find that an understanding of science, math, music, social studies, art, dramatic play, and storytelling will influence what you do with children.
