Both as a teacher and director I made a point of greeting the children as they entered the room. It would sound something like this. “Good Morning Filbert! I am so glad you came today.” After greeting the child I would greet the parent.
This warm greeting makes children feel welcome, and parents feel more comfortable leaving their children if they believe the teacher is happy to see their child.
When the previous day was not a happy one for a child or their parent because of a behavior problem it is so important to greet that child warmly. Children may have been cautioned or punished by the parent the night before, and or the parent is feeling upset or concerned.
It is also helpful to set up a positive feeling for the next day by how you say good bye to the children as they leave. Something like, “Bye Agnes, we are going to have so much fun tomorrow!”
Every day is a new beginning.
