April is
National Poetry Month
Head on over to your local library
and let your kids explore the wonder of poetry!
Here are a few books to look for:
Bella & Bean by Rebecca Kai Dotlich and Aileen Leijten
(Atheneum, 2009) Ages 3-7
Someone Used My Toothbrush! by Carol Diggory Shields and
Paul Meisel (Dutton, 2010) Ages 6-9
A Light in the Attic by Shel Silverstein (HarperCollins,
1981) Ages 8-11
The House That Jack Built by Diana Mayo (2006) 3 and up
If you can’t get out of the house today, here are some sites you might be interested in.
Need some fun poem starters?
I saw a kid that looked like me…
I saved seven things in my secret stash…
Five tiny kittens and one big _______ …
Have you seen my little ___________?...
Get creative! Give the kids a notebook to save their work; a poetry journal. Design a card with a newly created poem on it and send it to a friend. Take a poem and add a tune to make up your own song! Have fun!
It's time to have fun, to learn something new.
So, open your mind, let something through.
So, open your mind, let something through.
You're smart as a whip but it's tangled your head.
Untwist the knot. Pull on the thread!
Don't be afraid, just give it a try.
I know you can do it, and I would not lie!
Untwist the knot. Pull on the thread!
Don't be afraid, just give it a try.
I know you can do it, and I would not lie!
(See! It's so easy, even I can do it)
